The Humanities are what we do when we reflect about our lives; when we ask fundamental questions of value, purpose and meaning. MFH to Host Nobel Prize-Winning Writer in April
A major event this spring will be a free public symposium on April 19, 2002 honoring Jose Saramago, the Portuguese novelist who won the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature. Presented by the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, in cooperation with the John F. Kennedy Library and the Boston and Dartmouth campuses of the University of Massachusetts, "Saramago and Contemporary Literature from the Portuguese-Speaking World" will be held at the Kennedy Library in Boston. Joining Jose Saramago on the program will be writers and scholars from the U.S. and abroad, including Germano de Almeida from Cape Verde, Silviano Santiago from Brazil, and Frank Gaspar from the U.S. A VIP reception will follow, honoring Saramago and members of the Kennedy family.
During the week before the event, the Foundation will sponsor readings and lectures by the participating writers and scholars at libraries and other community organizations in Lowell, New Bedford, Ludlow, and other Massachusetts cities that have large Portuguese-speaking populations. For more information about the symposium, reception, and associated events, please contact Amy Hoffman at (617) 923-1678; ahoffman@mfh.org.

||| COMMONWEALTH FORUMS |||
======================
It has been nearly ten years since initiatives began to "reform" and "reinvent" government. How have these efforts fared nationally and in Massachusetts? What have we learned about fixing broken bureaucracies and where do we go from here? If more reforms are needed, is there the political will?
The next Commonwealth Forum will explore these timely questions. "The Challenge of Change: The Future for Government Reform," will be held on October 18, 2001, from 8:00 - 10:00am at the Omni Parker House, 60 School Street in Boston. Admission is free. For reservations, please call MassINC at (617) 742-6800 ext. 120.

||| NEW INTERACTIVE WEBSITE TO BE LAUNCHED |||
===================================
A prototype of a new interactive website, www.bringhistoryhome.org, will be launched on October 19, 2001. Developed by the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities in partnership with MIT and three Massachusetts history museums (Plimoth Plantation, Paul Revere House, and the Tsongas Center for Industrial History at Lowell National Historical Park), the site gives young people the opportunity to explore coming of age at three different points in American history-soon after the English settlement of Massachusetts, during the siege of Boston, and the first years of the Industrial Revolution. Visitors to the site can assume the role of three different characters, making choices that were faced by young people in the past. The project was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Wellspring Foundation. For more information, contact Ellen K. Rothman at (617) 923-1678 or ekrothman@mfh.org. [October 2007 Note: now contact Pleun Bouricius at 413-584-8440 or pbouricius@mfh.org.]
||| CLEMENTE COURSE IN THE HUMANITIES EXPANDS |||

The Clemente Course uses the study of the humanities as a means of helping economically disadvantaged people enrich their lives and become more active participants in civic society. For more information, please contact Kristin O'Connell at the Northampton office 413-584-8440 or mailto:koconnell@mfh.org.
