The Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities is a humanities programming and grant making organization affiliated with the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. ||| FIRST ANNUAL COMMONWEALTH HUMANITIES LECTURE ||| Beginning this spring, the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities (MassHumanities) in partnership with the Massachusetts Institute for a New Commonwealth (MassINC) will select one outstanding Massachusetts humanist to deliver the first annual Commonwealth Humanities Lecture. This honor is intended to recognize a significant contribution to the study of public life and civic affairs in the Commonwealth. ||| “THE FLUTE PLAYER” TO SCREEN Jocelyn Glatzer’s film, “The Flute Player,” which received distribution funding from MFH in 2003, will screen at the International Institute of Boston on Friday, January 23, 2004, 6 & 8pm, as part of the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival. The film tells the story of Cambodian-American human rights activist Arn Chorn Pond. Discussion with the filmmaker follows both screenings. For more information, go to www.thefluteplayer.net or call Over The Moon Productions, Inc. at (617) 971-9497. ||| “TUPPERWARE!” TO AIR ON PBS-FEB 9th ||| A new documentary by Laurie Kahn-Leavitt, funded in part by MassHumanities, “Tupperware!” tells the story of Earl Silas Tupper, an inventor from Massachusetts, and Brownie Wise, a self-taught saleswoman who built an international business out of bowls that “burped.” Narrated by Kathy Bates, the film includes an entertaining and thought-provoking mélange of interviews with Tupperware veterans, color home movies, footage of the company’s annual Jubilees, and ads and television excerpts from the 1950s. Airs nationwide on PBS as part of the American Experience history series on February 9, 2004, 9:00 p.m. (Check local listings) For more about the film go to www.thetupperwarefilm.com ||| SAVE THE DATE! The Organization of American Historians (OAH), with support from MassHumanities, will present a public event on March 26 commemorating the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. The program will feature Judge Robert Carter, one of the primary legal architects of the Brown v. Board decision, in a dialogue with renowned legal scholars and public intellectuals Lani Guinier (Harvard) and Derrick Bell (New York University), and eminent historian John Hope Franklin. The program will take place on Friday, March 26, 2004, at 7:00 pm at the Union United Methodist Church in Boston, site of the 1950 NAACP conference. Go to www.mfh.org/30thgiftform.htm. ||| GRANTS ||| The Foundation will be making its next round of Fiscal Year 2004 grants in June. The deadline for proposals is May 3, with drafts due by April 15. The maximum award is $5,000 for non-media projects. Media pre-production projects are eligible for awards of up to $10,000 and must result in an edited trailer. Applicants must consult with Ellen Rothman in the Watertown office or Kristin O’Connell in the Northampton office before submitting a draft.
